Your team DOESN’T CARE about your goals!
I want to talk about goals and your team and the fact that your team doesn't
really care about your goals. So the title of this blog post is that your team
doesn't care about your goals. Oh, how sad is that?
Unfortunately, it's true. Your
team doesn't really care about your goals and I know it breaks your heart as a
leader but that's the way the world is right. Everybody is listening to one
radio station WIIFM stands for What's In It For Me, what's in it for me, right?
People care about themselves. The most important person in most people's lives
is themselves. They care about how to make their own life better, they care
about their dreams, they care about their goals, etc. Now, you can either try
go against it and say, “No, I will make them care about my dreams, I will make
them care about my dreams!”
I wouldn't sign up for that. I wouldn't go that
route. You may try but that's not an easy route. Or you might be smart and say,
Hmm, since I now know that my team doesn't care about my goals. What could I
do? How could I still motivate them? How could I still get them to do more
knowing this new information that I know? If we understand that everybody is
trying to make their own lives better, everybody's worried about themselves
most, everybody's thinking about the most important person in the life which is
themselves, if we know that, then we can know how to build our business.
So
like right now, we're coming to the end of the month. Everybody wants to hit
high levels; everybody wants to hit higher qualifications. And of course, we
need more volume. We need more orders; we need more recruits but the mistake
that a lot of leaders make, they will call the team member and say hello, my
team member, I need to hit a higher level because I need to make more money.
Could you please go and sell more for me please? Or could you please go and buy
some products for me, please? It doesn't make a lot of sense because your team
member is thinking; that doesn't really sound like it benefits me in any way
shape or form. Of course it doesn't because you’re telling them what you want.
They don't give a flying monkey what you want, right? What they care about is
what they want. And if you understand that, instead of saying to a team member,
I want you to do this for me, right? You then do what good old Zig Ziglar used
to say all the time. One of the most famous quotes of Zig Ziglar is if you help
enough people to get what they want; you will get everything that you want.
That
applies to your business, my friend, you talk to your team member, and you
don't tell them what you want. You don't tell them what level you need to hit.
You don't tell them what volume you need to have, you ask them head of bonus, what
do you want? Where do you want to get in this business? What is your dream?
What is your ambition? Which level would you like to reach? What income would
you like to reach? And how can I help you to do that? What help can we sit
down, what plan can we make to help you to hit that level?
Now,
it's not about me anymore. It's about the team member and if you go to each and
every one of your team members, and if you help all of your team members to hit
the levels that they wish, to reach their dreams, to reach the income that they
want, to achieve their potential to achieve their vision, guess what's going to
happen with your goals? They'll just happen automatically, because everybody
will go higher. Because most of your team members, they're not happy being
where they are. They would like to earn more, they would like to reach more,
but you keep telling them about what you want and they don't care about what
you want. What you should be talking to them about is what do you want and how
can I help you get it? That's what the greatest leaders in business do. They
find out the team members dreams, they find out the team members goals, and
they help the team members hit them, They get on their side and they say well,
let's get you there, let's help you to get to that. They don't talk about
themselves. They don't talk what they need, right? They help the team member
get there.
Think about it. If you join a gym, does the gym owner says to you,
oh, I really need more money in my gym, can you really like buy more stuff from
me because I really need more money? No, the gym owner doesn't say that. The
gym owner says, “Hey, what do you want to reach? What are your goals? How fit do
you want to get? Oh, so maybe you'd like to take this food supplement as well
to help you with that goal. Oh, maybe you'd like to hire a personal trainer to
help you with that goal. Oh, maybe you want to sign up for aerobics class to
help you to get to that.” They don't say, “Hey, would you like to buy all of
this stuff because I need more money?” No. They ask what are your goals? How
fit do you want to get? How much weight do you want to lose? And then they try
to help you to get to your goal. You need to be like the gym owner too; help your
team members get what they want and you will get everything that you want.
