Why GOALS don’t work?

What?! How dare he say that! Right?

But hear me out for a second. Have you ever made goals and not achieved them. Well, if you are like most people it happens more often than not.

The reason is that we very often focus on the wrong thing. Let me give you an example. If you have ever watched a movie about pirates what are they after? TREASURE! That's right. However, is the whole movie about the treasure? No, most of the time only the last few minutes are about the actual treasure, the whole movie is about finding the TREASURE MAP and then following the map until it leads to the treasure.

You see your GOALS, are like the treasure and your ACTION PLAN is your treasure map. Without the map you can't get the treasure. That is why so many people FAIL, because they set a goal, write it down and then wait for it to magically appear in their lives. Doesn't work that way! You need to follow the map - your action plan, and do all the things that need to be done to lead you to your treasure - the goal!

That is why when you set your goals they have to be SMART goals.

Specific: firstly your goals have to be very very very specific, you need to write out in detail exactly what you want to achieve, if it;'s a house then how will it look like, if it's a car then what exactly its going to be, if it is more money then how much exactly and what are you going to spend it on and so on. The more precise you are with your goal the bigger the chance of achieving it.

Measurable: secondly, the goals have to be measurable. So many people say things like "I want more money" or "I want to become more confident" but how will you measure that. You need to set a goal that you can tell when you have achieved it, there has to be some sort of milestones or a number in the bank that will tell you how close or far you are.

Action Oriented: this is probably the most important part, your goal has to have an action plan imbedded in it so that you not only know WHAT you want but also know HOW to get it.

Realistic: fourthly, your goals need to be realistic. Now, don't get me wrong, your goal has to stretch you and be challenging, however, if last year you made £10,000 in your business and this year you set yourself a goal to make £1,000,000 it may be a too far fetched goal, maybe you should start with £100,000 first and work your way up.

Time Bound: finally, your goal has to have a deadline, because as you know, a goal without a deadline is just a wish. You have to make sure that every goal you set is scheduled to be completed within a set period of time.

And as you are setting yourself the BIG 12 month, 3 year and 5 year goals, don't forget to set some smaller daily, weekly and monthly goals. Because sometimes working towards that big goal and not seeing much progress can be discouraging, but if you are ticking off some smaller goals along the way that can keep you motivated.
