When is it ok to use the word “TRY”?
I want to explain to you when is it okay to use the word try, and you need to
use it for a particular reason. So the word try.
Now if you've been in personal
development for a while, if you've been in business for a while, you know that
everybody says, “Oh I’ll never use the word try, do or do not. There is no try.”
How the good old Yoda said, and it's true. When it comes to you building a
business, you should never use the word like, I’ll try to do this business,
I’ll try to sell, I’ll try to recruit, try means I will fail, I just don't know
when. Because actually if you think about it, you can't try anything. If I take
this pen and tell you, “Try to drop this pen.” Now you're going to go and I'll
say, “No, no, no, you dropped it. Don't drop it. Try to drop it.” So now you're
going to take it and now I'm just going to say, “No. So now you're not dropping
it. But try to drop it.”
How
can you try to drop the pen? You can't, you either drop it or you don't. So
same in your business, you can't try to do the business. You can't try to sell,
you can try to recruit. It just doesn't work like that, right? However, this is
going to be a bit higher level skill. There's a bit of psychology. The only
time when you want to use try is to imply or cause doubt in your prospects
mind. What do I mean by that?
So, the only context I would use try, let's say
for example, I'm selling a product and a customer says, “Well, I can buy cheaper
somewhere else, or I can get a cheap alternative on eBay or Amazon.” And I will
go, “Well, it's up to you at the end of the day, you can get really good
quality product from me with my personal guarantee and my customer service, or
you can try and get lucky on eBay or you can try to see if you can get
something good on Amazon.” What the word try then causes, it causes doubt in
the person's head.
So,
you’re only using try when you’re implying failure, or for example, if I'm
speaking to a prospect, I can say, “Are you trying right now to do a home based
business? Or have you tried in the past?” What that implies is that you failed
in the past and I will show you the proper way to do it. So, the only way you
use try is when you want to cause doubt in prospects head or you want to
initiate or imply failure. So, yeah, you can work with me or you can try do it
on yourself. You can attend my training, or you can try to figure it out by
yourself. So, what the try does, it causes the person to stop and go, “Hmm,
maybe I should actually do the thing that she's telling me to do.”
