What to say if you want a person to do what you want?
I want to talk about how to influence a person to do what you want them to
do, interesting.
So let's say you're talking to a customer, and you want them
to buy a certain thing. Or maybe you're talking to a team member and you want
them to do a certain thing maybe to watch a training or to attend an event or
to start with a certain package or whatever it is. How do you influence that
person? How do you suggest to them to do something and don't sound like you're
telling them to do something? Because we know that none of us like to be told
what to do. You probably don't like to be told what to do. I don't like to be
told what to do. And most people don't like to be told what to do. But you want
to influence a person to do a certain thing, to act in a certain way, don't
you?
There’s
a bit of psychology involved in this, but most people want to be like everybody
else. They don't want to be weird. They don't want to be awkward. They don't
want to be different. They don't want to be the odd one out. They want to be
like everybody else. They want to be normal. Most people want to be normal. So
one of the great ways to influence a person to do something that you want them
to do, or to buy something or to attend an event or whatever it is that you
want them to do, is to use that, is to say, “Well, what most of my customers do
is this or what most of my customers buy is this or what most of my customers
choose is this option.”
Or when you're talking to a new team member, you can
say, “Well, most of our team members, they attend this training so that they
learn how to do this, that and the other. Most of my team members watch these
videos in order to get better results. Most of my team members start with this
package.” When you use most people do this, or everybody on our team does that,
or all the customers choose this or most people do that, that programs the
person to do that too because they want to be like most people, they want to be
like everybody else. They don't want to be different. They don't want to stand
out.
So
when you use this phrase, it influences a person to choose that too because
think about it, everybody has iPhone, and everybody wants an iPhone. Everybody
starts buying this and everybody wants that. Whatever is in fashion, whatever
is the new newest thing, everybody jumps on that. Why? Because everybody does
that, because everybody's watching Game of Thrones, because everybody watches
that because everybody buys 50 Shades of Grey. So the trends, the fads that
come out, everybody jumps in it not because there's great value, not because
they really want it, but because everybody else is doing. So you can use the
same thing to your advantage too when you're talking to your potential customer
or to your existing team member.
