Talk about their goals!
Today I want to talk to you about
speaking with your team members about their goals because too many leaders are
talking about their own goals, not their team members goals, and it is a bit
crazy if you go to your team and go, “Hey, I need to reach this level, can you
please do some more? Hey, I want to hit this rank, can you please sell some more?”
Doesn't make much sense, does it? It's a lot more effective when we're talking
to a team member about their goals and we try to find out what do they want to
achieve in their life and in their business.
First step in working with your team
members with their goals is to find out what are they? To ask a person, “Hey,
what is it that you dream about? What do you want to achieve? Where do you see
yourself in five years or 10 years from now? What would you like to do for your
family? What would you like to achieve?” And when you start finding out what is
it that they dream about you a better understand of what motivates this person,
because one person might be motivated by money, another person by travel, and
another person by something else. So first step is to find out what are their
goals. But that's not enough just to find out their goals is not enough, that's
why we have step two.
And step two is to make a plan. Once you
found out the plans, once you find out the goals, then the next step is to
actually make a plan to achieve them. You might want to ask those questions
like, “Hey, how important is it for you to achieve these goals? And how would
you feel when you achieved it? And what will be the consequences of not
achieving these goals? And how would you feel about that?” To really understand
how committed they are to these goals, and then make a plan to achieve them.
If
you see that they’re really committed you say, “Hey, why don't we make a plan
to make this happen and maybe you will need a couple of steps.” Maybe you'll
need to make a plan for the next week, month or year to make sure that they can
achieve these goals. And if you help your team members to achieve their goals,
like Zig Ziglar said, if you help enough people to get what they want, you get everything
you want. Step two is to make a plan.
And then step three, is to make them accountable is to say, “Hey, look, I want to help you to reach your goals. But you need to keep going. One of the best things to do is to for you to be accountable, meaning you report to me your activity. So you report to me every day, what is it that you’ve done that day for your business in order to move closer to your goals.” When the person has the goals, when they have a plan and they are accountable to you every single day, it becomes a lot more likely that they will achieve their goals and guess what happens?
If you help this team member achieve
their goals and another team member achieve their goals, guess what's going to
happen with your goals? Your goal is going to become reality anyway. Because if
you help enough people to get what they want, you get everything that you want.
That's how you work with your team members. If you have team members, have a chat
with them find out what their goals are because if you don't even know what
their goals are, you can’t help them to reach them. Do this sort of inventorization
where you call your team members and you say, “Hey, I just would like to chat
with you about your goals and find out what is it you want to achieve in your
life.
