If you’re green you GROW if you’re ripe you ROT
I
want to talk about if you’re green you grow, if you're ripe, you're rot. This
is a famous saying by Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's Corporation, he used
to say if you're green you grow, if you’re ripe you rot. What does that even
mean?
Well, it means that you should never arrive, you should never be too cool
for school. One of the most dangerous things for an entrepreneur to say, is I
know it all. I've been to the trainings, I've read the book, I've been to the
seminar, I know everything, I don't need to learn anymore. This is where you
start going downhill, because once you arrive, the only way is down. So that's
why Jim Rohn used to say, let the end of your life find you climbing a new
mountain, not sliding down the old one.
That's why we always need to be
improving ourselves and always need to be growing no matter how much knowledge
you gain, no matter how much you reach, no matter how much money you make
doesn't even matter if you reach the top rank in your company, there is always
a way to grow. They say the biggest room in the world is room for improvement.
And like Tony Robbins always talks about CANI- Constant and Never Ending
Improvement.
There
is two things that most people desire in their life. Once you've taken care of
food, shelter, spouse, etcetera, once you've taken care of the basic human
needs, the top two human needs that most people require in their life to truly
feel satisfied, to truly feel happy in their life is growth and contribution, which
means making progress; making constant progress, and helping other people,
contributing. Because once you've made enough money to survive, etcetera, it's
no longer just, “Ah I need to survive. I need more money in my bank account.”
Somebody who's made billions why do they keep working? Why do they keep
creating? Not because they need another billion, they’re already done and they
could retire and three generations could live on that money. It's no longer
just about the money. It's more about impact. It's more about legacy. It's more
about creating something; contributing, helping other people.
But another part
of it is growth, constant pruning, because if you don't feel like you’re
growing, if you don't feel like you're progressing, if you don't feel like you’re
moving forward, that's when people get unhappy, that's when people get
depressed, that's when people get dissatisfied with their life because they
don't feel that movement, they don't feel that progress. That's why you should
never be ripe. That's why you should never say I know at all.
Always
find a way to grow, always grab the next book and say, “Well, let me read this
one. Maybe there's something new in this, maybe there's an idea, maybe there's
a nugget that will transform my life, that will help me to become more
confident, more healthy, smarter, sharper.”’ Always look for ways to improve yourself
and it doesn't have to cost enough it doesn't have to cost thousands of pounds
or dollars or whatever; sometimes it's very simple. Sometimes it's a free YouTube
video, sometimes is a free audio podcast. But always try to grow yourself.
Never stop at one point and just say, “Ah can't be bothered.” Because that's
when you lose your passion, that’s when you lose your motivation, that’s when
you lose your energy, because you're not motivated anymore. And people very
often ask me, they say, “How do you keep your motivation?” That's how, by
growing yourself all the time, the reason why I always have the motivation, the
reason why I always feel passionate, and I want to keep doing and doing things
is because I constantly grow myself. I constantly invest in myself. I
constantly learn. I constantly develop myself so that this motivation never
runs out. It never expires; my batteries never go down because I keep
recharging them.
