want to talk about buying somebody else's story. The title is don't buy
I once heard a big leader in network marketing say, “It doesn't matter if they buy your story. But make sure that you don't buy their story.” What does that mean? When you’re talking to a potential customer or a potential business partner, you’re trying to tell them your story, you're trying to sell them your story. You're trying to sell them the story of your product, you're trying to sell them the story of your business opportunity. Maybe you're trying to sell them your own story.
You are selling a story when you're speaking to somebody. And you may say, “Well, story sounds like I'm lying.” No, no, no, by no means. It may be a true story. It's your story of your product. It's your story of your business opportunity. Now, a question is, will everybody believe in your product story? Will everybody believe in your business opportunity story? Well, of course not. Loads of people will not believe that your product does what you say it does.
Loads of people are not going to believe that your business opportunity can give a life you say it can give. And that's normal. Nine times out of 10, it pays to be sceptical. People learn to be sceptical and they don't just jump on things right away and they don't believe every word they hear. It’s totally okay that some people are not going to buy your story. You’ll be telling them how amazing your product is. And they'll say, “Yeah, I don't know about that.”
You’ll say, “Well, my business is incredible. And it can change your life?” And they'll say, “Yeah, I'll think about that.” They might not buy your story. And that's okay. I know we don't want people to have choice sometimes. We would love everybody to have to buy our product. We would love everybody to have to join our business. But hey, that's not the reality. People have a choice and it's okay for them not to buy from you. It's okay for them not to join, because they do have a choice. They may not buy your story. And that's totally cool. But a lot of them will try to sell you their story too.
A lot of them will say, “Ah, I know your product is not good. Oh, I know that this business is never going to work out for you. You silly, you'll never reach that thing that you say you're going to reach. Oh, it's never going to work out for you. You’re never going to get that car, that trip, that income that you say you will get from this video.” Not only that, some people will not buy your story, they will try to sell you their story on why you will not be successful, on why your product is not going to help other people, on why you're not going to succeed in your business and so on.
And this, you have to make sure that you don't buy that story because it's so easy sometimes when things are not going as well as you'd hoped it would, when you're not getting results as fast as you expected to get the results, when maybe you didn't get a sale today, or maybe even this week. And doubts start creeping into your head. And then it takes one person like that saying, “Hey, you're wasting your time. It's never going to work out. Don’t do this thing.” And you decide to buy this story.
You decide to believe what they say and say, “You know what, maybe that person is right. Maybe it's not going to work out for me. Maybe this network marketing thing is not for me, after all. Maybe I should stick to my real job.” And that's when you make the critical mistake of buying their story. You should never buy their story. They don't have to buy yours in order for you to become successful. They don't have to buy your story in order for you to become successful because no one person will change your life.
They don't have to join your business to become successful, with or without them, you will reach your dreams, with or without them you will reach your goals because there are 7 billion people on this planet so you will never run out of people to talk to and you will find plenty who will say yes and buy your product. You'll find plenty who will say yes and join your business. You don't need the one that says no, no, no, it's never going to work out. But what you have to ensure, that you stay strong in your mindset and do not buy this story.
No matter how bad a day you had, no matter how bad a week or maybe even a month you had, you can't be buying negative people's stories. Just say, “Hey, I understand it's not for you. Totally cool. I respect your decision. Have an awesome day.” Change topic, talk about something else, but don't buy their negative story because that can really impact you negatively in your business.
